TITLE:                       Stories in Mind/Snapshot Program Facilitator

REPORTS TO:         VP of Mission

FLSA STATUS:        Hourly / Non-Exempt

SCHEDULE:             Mon-Fri 9-5, with early mornings/evenings/weekends as needed 

SUMMARY OF POSITION, PURPOSE, AND OBJECTIVES:

The Frazier History Museum is looking for a collaborative teammate to join our Stories in Mind/Snapshot program with engaging story-telling skills, a kind and caring nature, and a passion for sharing their knowledge with a diverse audience. The mission of Stories in Mind/Snapshot is to alleviate feelings of loneliness, depression, and isolation that many in our senior citizen community experience, especially in assisted living facilities.

To meet that goal, our two Stories in Mind facilitators visit multiple long-term care facilities daily to share stories, objects, and more from Kentucky history and the Frazier’s collection. Each session is led by a Stories in Mind facilitator from the Frazier with a focus of encouraging imaginative responses, open discussion, and socialization through an art, music, theater, or storytelling activity. This program is designed for the benefit of residents in certified nursing and long-term care facilities. We have also added another component called Snapshot, to interview residents to capture key moments of their lives for posterity and potential use at the Frazier, as well as to share with their families.

DUTIES / ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Research, build, and execute session plans for Stories in Mind programs that connect to Kentucky history and the Frazier’s collection and exhibits.

  • Deliver storytelling engagements to multiple senior care facilities daily that include diverse populations of varying cognitive and physical abilities.

  • Collaborate with other facilitators in the development and presentation of all Stories in Mind programming and hands-on learning experiences in off-site venues.

  • Provide Frazier visitor experiences via public tours and programming.

  • Ability to interview residents and edit videos for Snapshot.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to distinguish, research and interpret interesting stories from the past, synthesize a compelling story, and present in a confident manner.

  • Interest and experience in developing or customizing programs for residents in assisted living facilities.

  • Previous experience with leading informal learning activities for audiences with varying cognitive and physical abilities.

  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment.

  • Previous creative arts experience a plus.

  • Audio/Video experience is desired but not mandatory.

  • Ability to reassess, adapt, and improvise immediately.

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

EXPECTED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Must possess knowledge of Kentucky history or willingness to learn.

  • Knowledge and experience in local and cultural history.

  • Storytelling abilities.

  • Have curious nature.

  • Ability to research and develop a program to an audience on a weekly basis.

  • Draw connections from larger themes, topics, and previous engagements to inspire creative discussion and storytelling with facility residents.

  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment.

  • Ability to be compassionate, empathetic, and patient when working with clients with diminished capacities.

  • Strong interest in subject matters that relate to Frazier Museum programs and exhibitions.

  • Demonstrates a professional demeanor, initiative, confidence, creativity, attention to detail.

  • Ability to communicate with seniors to elicit memories and stories in discussions and on video.

  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills

  • Able to work independently.

  • Flexible and willing to embrace change/shift priorities on a regular basis from the Frazier.

WORKING & PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:

  • Driver’s license and use of personal vehicle for off-site Stories in Mind programming; the position requires local travel, which may at times be outside of and/or in addition to normal working hours.  

  • Typical physical demands include walking, standing, climbing stairs, and/or carrying up to 25 lbs.
