Teacher Professional Development: Teaching Louisville's Many Heritages

  • Frazier Kentucky History Museum 829 West Main Street Louisville, KY, 40202 United States (map)

Join us for Teaching Louisville’s Many Heritages, a teacher professional development opportunity offered at the Frazier History Museum. This session employs the story maps found on the website Louisville’s (Other) Heritages to answer the question, “What is heritage?” The story mapping project invited five Louisvillians with first generation migration backgrounds to share places and spaces in Louisville that are meaningful and have heritage significance for them. It was completed in 2025 by doctoral level students at the University of Louisville's Department of Public Affairs, under the direction of Professor Lisa Björkman.

The lessons presented in this session address Kentucky middle school and high school geography and inquiry social studies standards. The training is ideal for A.P. Human Geography teachers, as well as those interested in exploring the geography and people of the Louisville community. The session will be led by Allison Cecil (AP Human Geography teacher and department chair at duPont Manual High School), UofL faculty members, Dr. Caroline Sheffield (Associate Professor of Social Studies Education), and Dr. Amanda Lacey (Clinical Assistant Professor) from the Department of Elementary, Middle, and Secondary Education. In addition, teachers will enjoy a guided tour focused on Kentucky migration stories in the Frazier Museum galleries, light breakfast & pizza lunch, and entry into a prize drawing.

Free to teachers with advance registration.
